Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
