This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
