Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
